Groundswell’s Flax Roots Poster

Flax Roots Poster PreviewIt’s not every day we get to design for kiwis.

Last week, though, we were fortunate enough to put together a poster for Melbourne Green Party Candidate Rayna Fahey’s Australian campaign launch and fundraiser.

Rayna explains that:

The term “flax roots” is often used in New Zealand as an alternative term to “grass roots,” as flax (harakeke) is such an important material, especially for indigenous people.

This A3 poster is available as a PDF, or as an A5 handbill. Enjoy!

The Seeds of Protests Hit Santa Cruz

Bike Gear with Flower

More pointedly activist than other guerrilla gardeners, a crew of bicyclists hit the streets of Santa Cruz on August 1, to reclaim their surroundings from a deteriorating economy and to spread hopes for a greener, wilder future.  With flower seeds and other decorations, they turned former gas stations, drive-thrus, and car dealerships into public art and impromptu gardens.

Signs that read “My heroes carry guns in the their minds,” and “Community Garden Coming Soon!” were posted, and riders reported that their ride was a response to an open letter from the Corporate Rulers of America.

Join Groundswell as our Art and Activism Intern Grantwriter

At Groundswell, we have frequent discussions about the shape of things to come.  In order to continue growing, and to fund the projects that have sat in the wings for far too long, we’ve decided to take on an intern grantwriter for this fall.

Groundswell Logo

Be a key player in Groundswell’s sustainability and long-term success by volunteering your grant writing and research skills.  We are in need of an ongoing volunteer to handle research of available grants and to prepare applications.  Ideally, this person would be willing to initiate discussion about the organization’s financial sustainability, and to propose new models.

If you’re able to solve problems with limited direction, work independently, and take initiative with your research, you might just be the right person for the job!

Send us your cover letter and resume, and let’s talk.

In the Middle of a Whirlwind

In the Middle of a Whirlwind (Whirlwinds)  is a one-off online journal of theory, art, activism and organizing that inquires into current organizing efforts in the United States, and through that process, assembles a strategic analysis of current political composition as a tool for building political power.

In the Middle of a Whirlwind

Whirlwinds’ strategic context is this summer’s RNC and DNC protests; through these documents and the discussions that erupt from them they hope to directly impact the anti-Convention organizing. In a larger sense, and in the long-term, Whirlwinds is intended to provide a set of useful documents for contemporary radical organizing. Each essay and interview addresses the issues of movement, working class power and composition, and/or gives strategic insight into organizing, and the strengths and weaknesses of current movement/s in the United States.
