Dedicated to critical cultural production at the intersection of art and activism.

We cover artists from around the globe whose work explores and realizes social change. Our goal is to provide a narrative about these activist efforts while simultaneously participating in them. Maintained by The Groundswell Collective since 2007.

Radical Grandmothers Zine

Radical Grandmothers ZineEditor Bonnie Fortune and illustrator Becca Taylor compiled a zine of interviews with North American Raging Grannies.  Each Granny was asked the same set of questions, ranging from the personal impact of participating in the Raging Grannies to their thoughts about feminism.

The Raging Grannies – part protest, part street theatre – raise the age-old question of the role that art can play in activism.  On that subject, Grannie Pat Bernie responds thoughtfully:

Street protest is not only viable, it is ESSENTIAL for effecting change.  Art is  just  as  essential  as  being  visible,  for  using  artistic  props  and  colorful costumes makes our protests  far more visible  than merely  letters  to  the editor, or talking head interviews.  The extra color and pizzazz offered by artistic expression shows the passion of our convictions, and helps not only amuse, but recruit from passersby to help them think about the issues, and to want to be a part of our protests
