Toward an Anarcho-Design Practice
Josh MacPhee from Just Seeds posted a link to an article entitled Toward an Anarco-Design Practice, which was published over at Illvox. I read it on the train last night, and was excited by the anti-commercialism focus and the optimism about the role that design can play in “the movement towards a more humane and libertarian society” - it’s a perspective that is close to my heart.
Jared Davidson, the author of the Illvox piece, notes the “limited pockets of the design world” that have attempted to shift their role away from being the voice of capital, and stays critical of the impact of those efforts:
Proposing the shifting of priorities within the system rather than the shifting of the system itself — as history has proven in both state / democratic socialism, and the farce of parliamentary democracy — will do nothing more than gain a few insignificant victories while the real battle goes unwaged.
It’s succinct and powerful - well worth the read!
