Dedicated to critical cultural production at the intersection of art and activism.

We cover artists from around the globe whose work explores and realizes social change. Our goal is to provide a narrative about these activist efforts while simultaneously participating in them. Maintained by The Groundswell Collective since 2007.

Upcoming Serious Games Conferences

Game design is a burgeoning topic within activism.  Our friends at the Design Studio for Social Intervention are thinking at length about the possibilities it opens up for activists to cause interruptions in social systems, and are moving it to the center of their organizing strategy.

Serious Games

The Serious Games Initiative is one of the harbingers bringing us this new tactic. The organization focuses on uses for games in exploring management and leadership challenges facing the public sector. Part of its overall charter is to help forge productive links between the electronic game industry and projects involving the use of games in education, training, health, and public policy.

They and their subsidiary organizations are hosting two conferences here on the east coast of the United States.

Games for Change (G4C) is a subsidiary of the Serious Games Initiative that provides support, visibility and shared resources to individuals and organizations using digital games for social change, giving special assistance to non-profits and foundations entering the field.  They are hosting the Games for Change Conference in New York from June 2-4 of this year.  You’ll find more details and the registration form for the G4C conference here.

Games for Health, also founded by the Serious Games Initiative, has developed a community and best practices platform for the numerous games being built for health care applications. To date the project has brought together researchers, medical professionals, and game developers to share information about the impact games and game technologies can have on health care and policy. The Games for Health Conference takes place today and tomorrow in Baltimore, Maryland.
