Dedicated to clever and innovative trends of art and design in activism.

We seek out artists from around the globe who are using their talents for social change. We design for artists and activists at our other website.

Last Day for Art of Politics Submissions!

Today is the last day to submit your poster designs to the Art of Politics 2008 competition. The entries so far are impressive, and include Luba Lukova’s Social Justice 2008 alongside a few of our own. Three winners will be selected and rewarded with $100 to give to the community or political group of their choice.

Press/Play: Update

Groundswell will be participating in Press/Play on May 10th. Thanks to organizer Kt Andresky, whose work has put the project on the map internationally.  We are very much looking forward to representing Boston area arts and activism!

The Groundswell Collective

You’ll find our presentation in the pressed records, screen-printed newspapers, and website that are being produced for the event.  The website and newspaper will provide further detail of each artist and what they talked about during their presentation.

Mud Stencils

We’ve seen some innovative, earth-friendly practices in art activism lately, like moss graffiti, and guerrilla gardening. Stencil graffiti holds a special place in my heart, and it’s great to see an artist testing the boundaries of the medium. Jesse Graves is trying out mud:

I began using mud as my stencil medium because I wanted to create street art that does not release toxic fumes or damage property. My objective for these pieces is to place thought provoking messages in public spaces that celebrate bicycles and resistance to oil dependency. My hope is that mud stencils will also override negative stigmas that some associate with stenciling.

Press/Play

Press/Play is the first of six experimental broadcasts of 24 local, national and international artists exhibiting a five-minute presentation of what is currently happening within their local art community.

The presentations will be projected to an audience of artists and art supporters live via Skype. Press/Play will take place May 10th at 6pm EST. The first event will be exhibited at the 555 Gallery in Detroit, and the events will broadcast every other month for one year. Each will concentrate on individual themes within the arts. In September the broadcast will focus on “Art in social context and expressing political issues,” and the November broadcast will be about D.I.Y.

Artist participants are still needed to represent these cities:

Pittsburgh, Chicago, Philadelphia, Minneapolis, Los Angeles, Seattle, London, Paris, Berlin, Vienna, Amsterdam, Buenos Aires, Mexico City, Montréal and Rome.

Art Saves Lives

These are handmade prints, sized 8.5″ x 11″, printed on glass and framed.  Get in touch if you’re interested in purchasing them.

Art Saves Lives Too

All proceeds support Groundswell directly.  We can also accept donations!
