Dedicated to critical cultural production at the intersection of art and activism.

Project: Think Different brings people together to:

• talk about how current issues and pop culture affects us and engage in action for positive change
• learn media technologies and techniques to define and develop a message in music, film and video
• access media channels to spread that message.

This Boston-based nonprofit encourages a new, different pop culture.  Through a variety of mediums (video, music, spoken word) they engage the community in civic dialogue.

Their record label, Empowerment Records, has released a compilation called Empowerment.  The disc, in keeping with the label’s mission statement is 17 tracks of “socially conscious and responsible music that amplifies underrepresented perspectives and priorities to promote equity and fairness for positive change.”

People Clothing is a collection of Austin, Texas residents whose graphic t-shirts are inspired by their “belief and hope that a better world is possible.”  They’ve got some incredibly cool work, all hand-printed on sweatshop-free material.

They have partnered with communities around the globe, including El Sunza, El Salvador, Nyamirama, Rwanda, Kapchorwa, Uganda, and their own hometown in several successful fundraising and hands-on projects.

They are actively seeking members to join their wider collective, People Not Profit, as well as retailers, advocates, and those with extra funds to donate tax-deductible gifts.

My friend Bridget (founder of Wyld Stallions Records) just let me know about their event in Cambridge, MA tonight. They teamed up with the Riot Folk Collective recently to produce Line in the Sand, a compilation of contemporary protest songs. The proceeds from their sales will benefit the Iraq Veterans Against the War.

To prepare for tomorrow’s rally against the war, they’re holding a concert with performers from the disc:
