Dedicated to critical cultural production at the intersection of art and activism.

We cover artists from around the globe whose work explores and realizes social change. Our goal is to provide a narrative about these activist efforts while simultaneously participating in them. Maintained by The Groundswell Collective since 2007.

The Maine Civil Liberties Union continues to garner our attention with amazing, creative programming. To celebrate Banned Books Week, they’ve teamed up with SPACE Gallery and Longfellow Books to bring Maine-based authors to the stage for selected readings.

Below is a list of participants from MCLU field organizer Rachel Myers:

Edgar Allen Beem is a freelance writer, art critic, former librarian and the author of an upcoming book about local history entitled Hardlines.

Emilia Dahlin is the winner of countless singer/songwriter awards including the Portland Phoenix Best Music Poll (best female vocalist and best singer/songwriter).

Patty Hagge earned an MFA in Poetry from the Stonecoast Program at the University of Southern Maine. She is the Education Director at the Telling Room, a nonprofit writing program for young people in Maine.

Lewis Robinson is the author of Officer Friendly and Other Stories and winner of the PEN/Oakland-Josephine Miles Award. He teaches in the Stonecoast MFA program at the University of Southern Maine.

The event takes place at SPACE Gallery on Wednesday, October 3. Doors open at 6:30PM and tickets ($6, free for SPACE members and MCLU members) are available at the door or online at brownpapertickets.com.
