Jane McGonigal is a renowned game designer, and the participation architect behind the alternative reality game World Without Oil. Sponsored by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and others, the game invited players to “imagine the actual events of an oil shortage, document them and innovate solutions.” The game centered around the website, WorldWithoutOil.org. 1,800 participants contributed, and their actions were followed by some 60,000 viewers.
It’s unusual for us to publish something on game design here, but I found this so highly innovative that I thought it deserved mention. “I can’t tell you how many educators and nonprofit organizers I’ve talked to see this as the next generation’s curriculum,” said Jane McGonigal, in this article at ARGnet. It’s a very exciting medium – participatory, imaginative, and activist all at once!
